Three local high schools from Chino Hills, Rancho Cucamonga and Upland Compete in the Nation’s Largest Solar-Powered Boat Competition
INLAND EMPIRE, CA – The Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) co-sponsored three local high school teams that competed at this year’s Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s (MWD) Solar Cup™ competition. The three-day Solar Cup™ competition took place May 17-19 at Lake Skinner.
Solar Cup™ is a high school educational program that provides students with the opportunity to build and design solar-powered boats. This seven-month program, which ends with the boat competition, includes writing technical reports, creating social media campaigns and developing and implementing a strategy to build a boat powered by solar panels.
This year, 40 high school teams competed from five different counties in southern California; making it the nation’s largest solar-powered boat competition.
IEUA co-sponsored three teams that include: Chino Hills High School, located in Chino Hills, co-sponsored with the city of Chino Hills; Los Osos High School, located in Rancho Cucamonga, co-sponsored with Cucamonga Valley Water District; and Upland High School, located in Upland, co-sponsored with the city of Upland.
All three high schools were presented with awards:
- Los Osos High School (Veteran)
- 1st Place for Technical Reports – Inland Region
- 1st Place Endurance Race – Inland Region
- 1st Place Sprint Race – Inland Region
- 1st Place Public Service Message – Inland Region
- 6th Place Overall – Veterans and Rookies
- Upland High School (Veteran)
- 2nd Place Sprint Race – Inland Region
- 11th Place Overall – Veterans and Rookies
- Chino Hills High School (Veteran)
- 18th Place Overall – Veterans and Rookies
“Solar Cup™ is a fantastic educational program for high school students. This program offers educational elements that will benefit all participants by helping them develop team-building and problem-solving skills,” stated IEUA Board Vice President and MWD Board member Jasmin Hall. “Each team successfully displayed their knowledge of S.T.E.M. criteria while also emphasizing the importance of conservation and sustainability. The success of the students’ hard work, creativity and determination is extremely encouraging.”
