Inland Empire, CA – In recognition of Smart Irrigation Month during the month of July, the Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA/Agency) is facilitating a free automatic shut-off hose nozzle giveaway, in partnership with local water providers, in order to encourage wise irrigation habits.

In 2005, the Irrigation Association® initiated a public outreach campaign to highlight the benefits of efficient irrigation technologies and practices. The campaign focuses on the social, economic, and environmental benefits smart irrigation can achieve and how every resident can do their part.

“July continues to be one of the hottest months the Inland Empire experiences, causing an influx of residential water use. Landscape irrigation is estimated to account for nearly one third of all residential water use, totaling nearly nine billion gallons of water a day nationwide,” said Marco Tule, IEUA Board President. “More than half of residential irrigation is wasted due to evaporation, excessive watering, or inadequate irrigation system upkeep. Smart Irrigation Month educates on wise irrigation choices and encourages the community to take on these habits, including the use automatic shut-off hose nozzles.”

IEUA recommends following these important tips:

  • Use automatic shut-off hose nozzles to save five to seven gallons of water per minute.
  • Water when the sun is down, winds are calm, and temperatures are cool to reduce the chance of water loss due to evaporation or inclement weather.
  • Regularly check for and repair all leaks.
  • Adjust sprinkler systems to prevent runoff onto the sidewalk or street.
  • Install high efficiency sprinkler nozzles, drip irrigation, or a weather-based Smart Controller that can provide the appropriate watering schedule and adjust for changes in the weather. Rebates for sprinkler nozzles, irrigation controllers, and more can be found at SoCalWaterSmart.com.

“Smart Irrigation Month encourages the community to use water efficiently, minimize waste, and maintain and upgrade home irrigation systems,” continued Tule. “By using water wisely, we can ensure the reliability and sustainability of our water resources for generations to come.”

IEUA will be facilitating an automatic shut-off hose nozzle giveaway at the Agency’s Chino Headquarters Building A located at 6075 Kimball Avenue, Chino, California from July 1 – July 31 from 8AM – 5PM Monday – Thursday, limit four per household, while supplies last. The Agency will be closed on Thursday July 4, 2024, in honor of Independence Day.
