INLAND EMPIRE, CA – The Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA/Agency), Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD), Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority (SAWPA), and member agencies, proudly recognized a distinguished group of industries for achieving exceptional 100% permit compliance in Wastewater Discharge throughout Calendar Year 2022.
IEUA, in collaboration with LACSD and SAWPA, jointly permits Significant Industrial Users (SIUs) discharging to the Non-Reclaimable Wastewater System (NRWS) and Inland Empire Brine Line (Brine Line). The industries were formally recognized at the IEUA Board meeting on November 15, 2023, as 36 Certificates of Recognition for Compliance were presented, celebrating the dedication of these industries to environmental responsibility and strict regulatory adherence.
These industries are SIUs, which are defined by federal regulations as industries discharging 25,000 gallons or more per day of process wastewater, contributing a process waste stream comprising 5% or more of the average dry weather hydraulic or organic capacity of the treatment plant, or having a reasonable potential to adversely affect the treatment plant.
The discharge requirements for SIUs, specified in the Code of Federal Regulations, exceed local limits for other industries. Moreover, many SIUs must operate pretreatment systems to ensure satisfactory treatment and maintain consistent compliance.
“Recognizing these challenges and the dedication required in a highly regulated environment, we commend the industries for their environmental stewardship efforts,” stated Marco Tule, IEUA Board President. “IEUA’s management of discharge operations enhances the ability of the Agency’s water recycling plants to comply with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System requirements, protects the environment, and helps maintain efficient wastewater treatment operations. IEUA’s commitment to 100% permit compliance reflects not only maintaining responsible practices but also is a promise to safeguard our community’s water resources for generations to come.”
