Landscape Alliance
The Inland Empire Landscape Alliance formed in 2006 as a voluntary collaborative working group to address and coordinate regional landscaping policies. During this time, the Landscape Alliance has worked with local municipalities and stakeholders to evaluate existing landscape policies and to provide information about all aspects of landscape water efficiency through educational newsletters, workshops and tours. Areas of focus include plant palettes, irrigation materials and techniques, low impact development practices, and exploring the various policies and projects within IEUA’s service area which are building wise water communities.
When, in February 2008 the Department of Water Resources released a “Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance” which every city in the State of California must either adopt, or be in compliance with through their own ordinance by January 2010 as mandated in AB1881 (Laird, 2006), the IELA came together to evaluate and comment on the ordinance. From these meetings, a consensus emerged that in order to actively promote the best interest of the region and create regional consistency the Landscape Alliance would create a model ordinance that cities could adjust to suit their unique needs. As a result, the Landscape Alliance Model Ordinance and support materials for customers, such as the Water-Wise homeowner Landscape Guide.
